Abstract

The behaviour of a single ant, bee, termite and wasp often is too simple, but their collective and social behaviour is of paramount significance. The National Geographic TV Channel reveals that advanced mammals including lions also enjoy social lives, perhaps for their self-existence at old age and in particular when they are wounded. Hence, most optimization approaches are only suitable for small problems practically. The local search approaches are all based on neighbourhood structures defining how to obtain a new solution from the current ones, such as tabu search and simulated algorithm. In this paper, we develop an ant colony optimization approach to the job shop scheduling problem that utilizes a local search technique.
