Risk Factors with Breast Cancer Among Women in a Tertiary Care Hospital

Abstract

Background: The incidence of breast cancer is on the rise in India, breast cancer is the second most common malignancy in Indian women.

Aim: The aim of this study was to find out the association of various risk factors with breast cancer among women in Warangal. Materials and Methods: 145 women were studied. Subjects were women with breast cancer (N=37) and age matched control subjects (N=108) without breast cancer attending MGM and St. Ann’s hospital during May2009-Nov2010. Subjects were interviewed using a pre-tested questionnaire for risk factors family history, age, economic status, breast feeding, menarche, parity, menopause, marital status and data was expressed in proportion.

 Results and Conclusion: Age of patients ranged from 25-80yrs.In this study, 20(54.1%) cases and 62(57.4%) controls were illiterate, the mean duration sum of total breast feeding for all children was 6.44years in cases and 7.2 years in controls(OR=1.267,95%CI,0.599-2.679) (P<0.004). 43.2% cases, 61.1% controls had Body Mass Index (BMI) in the range of 25-29.99 and 19% cases and 5.6% controls had BMI ≥30. BMI was significantly higher among cases than controls (P=0.0076). 37.8% of cases and 44.4% of controls had attained menopause before the age of 45years and a higher number of controls were living with spouses than cases (P<0.001). A larger number of controls (100, 92.5%) were living in urban areas than cases (8,7.5%) (P<0.0001). 

Conclusion: There was significant difference between cases and controls in relation to place of residence, occupation, marital status, BMI and breast feeding.
