Abstract

This paper explains the formulation of Applied Element Method (AEM) as applied to plain and reinforced concrete beams as two-dimensional structures by primarily implementing material non-linearity. Both concrete and steel reinforcement have non-linear stress-strain curve in the model. A multi linear curve is assumed for reinforcement and concrete is modeled as a progressively fracturing solid. Static linear analysis of a reinforced beam using this method was compared with finite element and coupled boundary element method solutions. Static non-linear analysis of plain concrete beam using this method was compared with results of fracture mechanics model and published experimental results. The results were in good agreement with established analysis methods and experimental data. Advantages of AEM which is simple and straightforward in the modeling of reinforced concrete members are also discussed.
