Assessment of Knowledge and Attitude of Diabetic Patients Regarding Various Lifestyle Modifications: An Institutional Based Study

Abstract
Background: Numerous studies in the past literature have indicated the importance of physical inactivity in the development of type 2 diabetes. Indeed, in most studies its relative importance may be underestimated because of imprecision in measurement. Hence; we planned the present study to assess the knowledge and attitude of diabetic patients regarding various lifestyle modifications.
Materials & Methods: The present study included assessment of knowledge and attitude of diabetic patients regarding various lifestyle modifications. A total of 250 diabetic patients were included in the present study. An adapted questionnaire was used as described previously in literature. The researcher considered only questions related to knowledge, attitude and practice on lifestyle modifications. Each correct answer was coded 1 and a wrong or I don‟t know answer was coded 0. Al the results were compiled and analysed by SPSS software.
Results: Majority of the subjects belonged to the age group of 46 years to 55 years. 55 and 40 subjects belonged to the age group of 36 to 45 years and 25 to 35 years respectively. Out of 250 subjects, 140 were males and 110 were females. 180 subjects had poor knowledge in relation to the benefits of physical exercise. 20 subjects had good knowledge regarding the benefits of healthy diet.
Conclusion: Diabetic patients have low level of knowledge and attitude in relation to various lifestyle modifications.
